The American Red Cross and Galesburg Fire Department partnered Saturday for a “Sound the Alarm, Save a Life” event focused on installing free smoke detectors in local homes.

Volunteers gathered at the Dale May Fire Training Facility for a brief training session before heading into the community in teams. The effort is part of a national Red Cross initiative aimed at reducing home fire deaths and injuries.
More than 60 volunteers and Red Cross personnel participated, with additional crews working in the field beyond those pictured.
Residents interested in receiving free smoke detectors or volunteering for future events can sign up through the Red Cross.
In Illinois, most residential fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms.
