U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen has included a $3.4 million Galesburg fleet maintenance facility in his federal funding requests for fiscal year 2027, advancing the city’s effort to build a new centralized repair facility.
City officials say the proposed facility would handle maintenance for transit buses, police and fire vehicles, and heavy equipment such as snowplows. The goal is to bring more repair work in-house, reduce reliance on outside vendors and limit downtime for vehicles.
“We are grateful to Congressman Sorensen and his team for supporting the City’s funding request for a new fleet maintenance facility,” Mayor Peter Schwartzman said.
The city submitted its request for federal funding in March.
Sorensen’s inclusion of the project is an early step in the federal appropriations process and does not guarantee funding. Members of the House may submit a limited number of community project requests, but only some are included in the final budget approved by Congress.
Sorensen announced his selections last week. U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth have not yet released their lists.
City representatives and members of the Knox County Area Partnership for Economic Development recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Congress and federal agency officials as part of ongoing efforts to secure funding for local projects.
