Galesburg police are investigating a fatal train-pedestrian collision reported Thursday afternoon on the city’s southeast side.
Officers with the Galesburg Police Department responded about 1:51 p.m. to the 800 block of Peck Street, where a male pedestrian was found with life-threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to OSF St. Mary Medical Center, where he later died, according to a department news release. The victim’s name has not been released.
The incident prompted temporary rail stoppages across parts of the city. Authorities said trains were halted at the North Whitesboro, Chambers and Lincoln Street crossings while crews responded to the scene near Chambers and Peck streets.
Residents were asked to avoid the area and use underpasses to navigate around blocked crossings until trains are able to resume movement.
The crash remains under investigation. Assisting agencies included the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the Galesburg Fire Department and Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service.
