Galesburg High School

Boys soccer: Galesburg 2, Monmouth-Roseville 0
Galesburg soccer coach Phil Redington is pleased with the progress of his team as it approaches a .500 winning percentage and prepares for the postseason.
The Silver Streaks shut out visiting Monmouth-Roseville 2-0 on Oct. 4, improving their record to 6-7-1 with six games remaining before the Oct. 17 regional tournament. The win was the team’s third in a row.
In the game, Alex Kamesa scored in the first half. Galesburg added an insurance goal in the second half after a high kick from downfield by goalkeeper Michi Flores was caught in the wind and sailed just over the top of the Monmouth-Roseville goalie. The goal was credited to Flores.

“Monmouth is always a physical team; they play great soccer,” Redington said. “We knew that if we could pass the ball around them and not get into those confrontations, those physical battles, that we would be just fine. So a lot of our movements and patterns in last night’s practice — really the whole week — has been in creating space that’s five and six yards big. But we’re not going to have those physical confrontations.”
The Silver Streaks will play six games over the next 12 days.
“We’re so young; it’s taken 10, 12 games to embed thoughts, philosophies, how we want to play,” Redington said of his team’s progress. “And starting four sophomores and two freshmen at times does that. The other thing that we’ve dealt with is injuries and eligibility.”
Redington said he has used 11 different starting lineups in the 14 games played so far.
“The big goal is to continue to push,” he said. “We know we’re playing Rock Island in the regional semifinal with the winner likely to play Richwoods, so we certainly like the regional seeding that we got for where we were at at the time, and we’ll just have to see where things fall.”
Galesburg plays at Quincy on Oct. 7, then returns home to face Washington on Oct. 9 and Pekin on Oct. 11.
