Shaffer shines in Sandburg’s four-set victory

Shaffer leads Sandburg victory
Playing her final home match, Abigail Shaffer led the Sandburg volleyball team in kills and came within one of tying her career high in digs in the Chargers’ 25-21, 27-25, 25-27, 26-24 Sophomore Night win over Black Hawk on Wednesday night.

Shaffer, who was honored along with fellow sophomore Emma Schweigert before the contest, totaled 13 kills and 28 digs in the victory. She set a season high for digs and was one away from matching her career best of 29 against Walters State in last year’s opening round of the national tournament.

Shaffer was one of three Chargers (15-22 overall, 7-3 Arrowhead Conference) to reach double figures in kills. Harlee Hainds had 11 kills and three blocks, while Jalie Eller added 10 kills to close the regular season.

Setter Quinn Rexroat finished with 38 assists, tied for her third most this season. Libero Addison Gillen’s 30 digs were a season high, surpassing her previous mark of 27 set Sept. 20 against Olive-Harvey. Freshman Macy Nolan added 10 digs.

Region 4 tourney starts next week
Sandburg will open the postseason with a road match in the Region 4 quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Nov. 5. The Chargers’ opponent will be announced early next week.
