Triton shocks Chargers in Region 4 quarterfinals
Triton scored once in each half and upset the Sandburg men’s soccer team 2-0 in the Nov. 3 quarterfinals of the Region 4 tournament at Kleine Field.

Pablo Albiach, 8, and Ramon Ponga, 20, work against Triton. The Trojans upset the Chargers, 2-0, Nov. 3 to advance in the Region 4 quarterfinals.

The loss snapped a 12-game unbeaten streak for the second-seeded Chargers, who had gone 9-0-3 in that span and hadn’t dropped a match since Sept. 8 at Truman. That stretch included a 3-1 Sandburg win at Triton on Sept. 28.

It’s the second consecutive year the Trojans, who came in as the No. 7 seed, have beaten the Chargers on their home field in the postseason. Triton won 4-0 here last year in the first round.

Sandburg finished the year with a 12-3-3 record that included a second straight Arrowhead Conference championship.

Charger volleyball team opens postseason in Kankakee
The Sandburg volleyball team will open the postseason tonight, Nov. 5, on the road. The Chargers earned the No. 6 seed in the Region 4 Division II District B tournament and will face third-seeded Kankakee in a quarterfinal match at 6 p.m.

Charger freshman Quinn Rexroat goes for a save in a match against Black Hawk College. The No. 6-seeded volleyball team opens the Region 4 tournament tonight, Nov. 5, against No. 3 Kankakee.

The semifinal and championship rounds will take place in Madison, Wisconsin. The Nov. 5 winner will play at 6 p.m. Nov. 8 against No. 2 Sauk Valley or No. 7 Triton. The championship match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Nov. 9.

Sandburg and Kankakee met Sept. 27 this season in Kankakee, with the Cavaliers sweeping the contest 25-13, 25-17, 25-19.

The Chargers earned their way to last season’s NJCAA Division II Volleyball Championship after entering the postseason as a No. 4 seed and knocking off the first and second seeds in the last two rounds of the region tournament. It marked Sandburg’s fourth trip to nationals in program history (all since 2017).

Despite 3-pointers, Sandburg women fall to Southeastern
The Sandburg women’s basketball team came out on fire in the first half and finished with 14 3-pointers but couldn’t close out Southeastern in a 77-76 home loss Nov. 4.

The Chargers hit nine first-half triples and led by as many as 21 points in the opening two quarters before going into the locker room up 39-24.

A Paige Huffman 3-pointer put Sandburg ahead 59-42 late in the third, but the Blackhawks scored the next 12 points to pull within five in the opening minute of the fourth. An 8-0 run put Southeastern ahead 67-64 with 5:50 to play.

Down 77-76, two missed free throws by Southeastern with 9 seconds left gave the Chargers a chance to win it, but Antonia Kisler’s 3-point try at the buzzer was partially blocked and fell short.

Sophomore point guard Lillian Covarrubias scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting before leaving with an injury in the fourth quarter. Covarrubias was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, dished out four assists and had a pair of steals.

Other top Chargers included Kisler with 27 points, 8 of 19 from the field, 5 of 7 on 3-pointers, 11 rebounds and four assists; Hailey Redding with 11 points and eight rebounds; and Tiera Hall with 15 rebounds (nine offensive) and four assists.
