Galesburg softball picks up second win in Knoxville

Galesburg used a balanced offensive attack and a strong pitching performance to earn an 8-2 nonconference road win over Knoxville on March 23.
The Silver Streaks (2-4) scored in four different innings and finished with 14 hits, breaking the game open with a three-run sixth inning after taking a 5-2 lead.
Galesburg got on the board quickly, scoring twice in the first inning, then added two more in the fourth to build a 4-0 advantage. Knoxville answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings but could get no closer.
Freshman Mavery Bland led the Silver Streaks at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two doubles. Junior Evelin Guel added two hits and scored three runs, while senior Hannah Barton tripled and drove in two runs.
Galesburg’s lineup produced throughout, with Tamryn Davis and Layla Shepler each collecting two hits as the team posted a .412 batting average.
In the circle, sophomore Taylor Lee pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out 11 and walking two.

Galesburg girls soccer suffers first loss
Galesburg girls soccer coach Jessica Jones was upbeat despite the Silver Streaks’ 8-2 home loss to Western Big 6 Conference rival United Township on March 24.
“Last year this game was a 9-0 loss, and this year it was an 8-2,” Jones said. “We scored two on them this year, and they never stopped fighting for one minute. They were in the game the entire time.”

The Silver Streaks (3-1, 0-1 WB6) conceded six first-half goals, including a decisive stretch late in the half, but were unable to recover despite a stronger second half.
Galesburg entered the match unbeaten but struggled to contain United Township’s attack early. The Panthers (2-1, 1-0 WB6) added two more goals after halftime to secure the win.
United Township scored early, but a goal by Madalyn Lardi tied the match at 1-1. The Panthers then surged late in the half to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
Jones credited her team’s defensive adjustments and communication.
“Our defense is really coming together,” she said. “The teamwork, talking to each other and moving — and the biggest thing is just staying positive the whole entire time.”
Galesburg showed resilience in the second half, holding United Township to two goals while maintaining pressure.
Senior midfielder Leirah Harrison said the team showed growth.
“I would say we definitely tried our best. There was some grit there,” Harrison said. “We kind of got it together in the second half.”
Harrison also pointed to improved passing and confidence.
“We’ve been working on these leading passes a lot, and it’s showed up in games,” she said. “Overall, we’re having a great season so far.”
Lardi scored Galesburg’s second goal on a penalty kick late in the match. Addison Schatteman and Kylie Hayes each scored three goals for United Township.
Galesburg is at East Peoria for a 6 p.m. match March 26, then hosts Canton at 11 a.m. March 28.
