Galesburg High School

Quincy bumps Galesburg from first in WB6

Quincy won the battle of first-place teams in the Western Big 6 on Jan. 31, defeating visiting Galesburg 45-38.

The loss dropped Galesburg to 9-2 in conference play and 22-3 overall. Quincy improved to 10-1 in the WB6 and 17-7 overall.

Neither team shot well, with both finishing at about 35% from the field. Galesburg committed 20 turnovers, compared with 13 for Quincy.

Despite its shooting struggles, Galesburg controlled much of the first half. The Silver Streaks opened with an 11-5 lead before Quincy closed within 11-10. A pair of quick field goals by Lily Furrow helped Galesburg take a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern. Quincy tied the game while Galesburg went scoreless until the 3:30 mark. The Blue Devils scored on second-chance opportunities to take the lead before Zaniyah Carter hit a field goal in the final seconds, sending the Streaks into halftime with a 24-23 advantage.

Quincy gained separation late in the third quarter, pulling ahead by eight points.

The fourth quarter — often a strength for Galesburg — did not swing the momentum this time. Quincy extended its lead to as many as nine points, and the Silver Streaks were unable to mount a significant run.

Galesburg plays at LaSalle-Peru on Monday, Feb. 2, before closing the regular season with three conference games. The Silver Streaks host Geneseo at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 and United Township at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 7, then finish the regular season at Rock Island on Feb. 12.

Galesburg ends swim season with first dual loss

Galesburg ended its regular season with its first dual loss of the year, falling to Normal Community 93-90 on Jan. 31 at Mustain Pool.

“Ten Silver Streaks took on a much bigger team and put together a meet that came down to the last race,” coach Jake Miller said. “Galesburg got out-touched by .26 of a second in that final showdown. It was a meet that even if you weren’t a seasoned fan of swimming, you would have enjoyed.”

The loss concluded the Silver Streaks’ dual-meet season at 6-1. The team will defend its conference title at the Western Big 6 Conference Championships on Feb. 7 at Sterling.

The Silver Streaks won multiple events and placed consistently across the lineup, but Normal Community’s depth proved decisive in the final team scoring. Galesburg picked up key victories from Cole Furrow in the 500-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke, Nolan Good in the 100 butterfly and Brayden McGuire in the 100 breaststroke, while also capturing the 200 medley relay.

With the score tied at 68, Ralph Wires kicked the ball out to an open Bockman at the top of the key, and the sophomore left-hander drilled the go-ahead 3 with 32.9 seconds remaining.

The win was Sandburg’s seventh in its last eight games. The Chargers improved to 16-8 overall and are 10-2 over their last 12 contests.
