Geneseo defeats Galesburg 59-10 in dual meet

Geneseo took control early and rolled to a 59-10 victory over Galesburg in a dual meet Dec. 18 at Thiel Gym.
Galesburg head wrestling coach Greg Leibach said he expected a tough challenge from the Maple Leafs, who have dominated Western Big 6 wrestling in recent years.

“But our kids wrestle well at home, and I was excited to see some of those matchups,” Leibach said. “I’m not disappointed in the way we wrestled. I thought we were pretty fearless and made the right reactions in a lot of situations. Geneseo just had an answer, and we’ve got to keep building so we can have answers, too.”

Geneseo opened the meet with a fall at 106 pounds. Forfeit wins at 113 and 120 followed, pushing the Maple Leafs’ lead to 18-0 before Galesburg recorded its first contested bout.
The Maple Leafs continued to build their advantage through the middle weights, extending the margin to 31-6. Galesburg scored its points behind Brayden Edwards at 138 pounds and Beaudry Fisk at 150, but Geneseo closed the meet by winning each of the remaining matches.

Despite the lopsided loss, Leibach said the meet provided valuable feedback early in the season.
“Our upper middle weights have been a real strength for our lineup, and it’s fun to watch them compete,” Leibach said. “The lower half is a little light right now, but hopefully we’ll fill that out in the coming months.
“I’m excited for the dual meet schedule in January because I think we can put out a stronger lineup. Our kids love competing not just for themselves, but for the team score, and I think we have some exciting challenges ahead.”
The Silver Streaks close out December with two major meets. They compete in the Metamora Invitational at 9 a.m. Dec. 20, then wrestle in the Lincoln High School Tournament at 11 a.m. Dec. 29 and 8:30 a.m. Dec. 30.
Boys swimming and diving wins dual at Richwoods

Galesburg remained undefeated through four dual swimming and diving meets after a 114-70 victory over Richwoods on Dec. 18.
The Silver Streaks won eight of 12 events and swept all three relays to secure the team win. Galesburg opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay and closed it by winning the 400 freestyle relay.
Cole Furrow and Brayden McGuire led the way with multiple wins. Furrow captured the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, while McGuire won the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle. Samuel Puerta added individual victories in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and Cordae Sanchez claimed first place in the 1-meter diving competition.
Galesburg also dominated the relays, winning the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle events, while placing an additional relay team in the scoring in two of those races.
Next up, the Streaks return to Richwoods on Dec. 20 for their first invitational of the season. Diving events begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by swimming at 1 p.m. After that, GHS is off until it hosts Burlington at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 8.
