
MONMOUTH — Monmouth College will honor area veterans with an evening event Nov. 11 featuring state Rep. Dan Swanson, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard.
The program, “A Monmouth College Salute to Veterans,” begins at 7 p.m. in the Veterans Memorial Great Room on the main level of the Center for Science and Business. It is free and open to the public.
Swanson, who served in Iraq, will lead a panel discussion with six speakers, including local veterans and community members. Monmouth President Patricia Draves will offer opening remarks, and members of the Fighting Scots Marching Band will provide patriotic music.
Panelists include:
- Ryan Bronaugh, Class of 2012, a U.S. Navy veteran who served in Iraq, Kosovo and Africa.
- Alfonso Mares ’28, a Monmouth student involved in ROTC.
- Joe Switzer, Monmouth police chief and Iraq War veteran.
- Cheri Stanton, a U.S. Navy air traffic controller from 1966-69.
- Rita Cross, a Gold Star Mother whose son, Sgt. First Class Kyle Werhle, died in Iraq.
- Andy Davis, former campus safety director, Army veteran and volunteer football coach.
Swanson enlisted in 1977, served more than 20 years of active duty and twice returned from retirement for missions in Iraq and at the Rock Island Arsenal. He has represented Illinois’ 74th District since 2017 and chairs the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
