Water levels at Lake Storey have returned to normal after being kept lower than usual to accommodate construction of the multiuse walking trail expansion, city officials announced.
The contractor reached the required elevation before the expected June 1 deadline, allowing the lake to begin refilling. Recent rainfall helped return the lake to its normal level.
Construction on the trail expansion remains slightly ahead of schedule and is expected to continue throughout the summer. Crews are working on drainage systems, including box culverts and piping, as well as embankment areas. Once that work is complete, construction will shift to the path along South Lake Storey Road, starting from the west end near the intersection with West Lake Storey Road.
The project is funded by two Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The trail is expected to complete a full loop around Lake Storey by 2027, with the south side of the lake constructed in 2026 and the east side completed in 2027.
The finished trail will be a 10-foot-wide paved path linking north-side amenities, including Lake Storey Beach, boat launches, soccer fields and hiking trails, with south-side facilities, including Allison Campground and Lakeside Water Park. It also will improve pedestrian and bicycle access to Carl Sandburg College.
Lake Storey Beach, 1572 Machen Drive, is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Labor Day. The beach is unguarded, and swimming is allowed in designated roped-off areas. Locker rooms are available during beach hours.
Boat rentals and concessions are available daily from noon to 7 p.m. Additional information is available on the city’s website.
