Knox College to upgrade fieldhouse surface this summer

By Galesburg Community News    March 31, 2026

Knox College will replace the indoor surface at the T. Fleming Fieldhouse this summer, a project aimed at modernizing one of the campus’s most heavily used athletic and recreation spaces.

Construction is scheduled to begin June 8 and is expected to last approximately 10 weeks. The Fieldhouse will be closed during the renovation, according to college officials.

The facility supports a wide range of daily activities, including walking, running, athletic practices, club sports and intramural competitions. College organizations such as badminton, tennis and ultimate frisbee clubs regularly use the space, along with classes and fitness walkers.

The updated Fieldhouse will include a six-lane oval track, sprint straightaway, track railing and courts for basketball, volleyball, tennis and pickleball. The project also prepares Knox to host the Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in February 2027.

“This project is really about serving the entire Knox community,” said Justin Newell, vice president and director of athletics. “The Fieldhouse isn’t just a track facility — it’s a space used every day by fitness walkers, runners, club sports, intramurals and classes.”

Beynon Sports, which installed the original surface in 1991, will manage the project.
