Knox College senior Lance Miller has added his name to Prairie Fire history

GALESBURG, Ill. — Knox College senior Lance Miller has earned a spot at the NCAA Men’s Cross Country Championships, becoming the second runner in program history to qualify for the national meet.

Miller secured his berth after placing 20th at Saturday’s NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Wartburg College, finishing the 8K course in 24 minutes, 56.7 seconds. Since Knox did not qualify as a team, Miller needed to finish among the top seven runners from programs that did not advance. His strong showing placed him safely inside that group.

Only one other Prairie Fire athlete — Brian Campbell in 1993 — has advanced to the NCAA Championships.

A season defined by consistency

Miller’s nationals qualification caps a fall marked by steady, top-level performances. He currently holds the four fastest 8K times in Knox College history, including a personal-best 24:28.7 at the Midwest Conference Championships on Nov. 1, where he placed second for the second consecutive year. His performances this season put him among the most accomplished distance runners Knox has produced.

Regional strength underscores qualification

The Midwest Regional is annually one of the nation’s most competitive, and this year was no exception. Of the top 25 finishers, 18 represented teams that automatically qualified or later earned at-large bids to the NCAA Championships, including Wartburg, the University of Chicago, Loras, North Central and Washington University in St. Louis.

That strength meant a small number of individual spots were available — making Miller’s advancement even more notable.

Championships set for Nov. 22

The NCAA Championships will take place Saturday, Nov. 22, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at the Roger Milliken Cross Country Course, hosted by Converse College and OneSpartanburg, Inc. A live webcast begins at 9 a.m. CST on NCAA.com.
