The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather advisory for the region beginning Friday, Jan. 16.

Forecasts call for scattered snow showers Friday afternoon and evening that could bring light accumulations, reduced visibility, brief periods of strong winds and slippery travel conditions.

Dangerously cold temperatures are expected to follow. Wind chills are forecast to reach minus 3 degrees Sunday morning and again Sunday night. By Monday morning, wind chills could dip to minus 18 degrees, with an actual temperature near minus 1.

Several warming centers will be available in Galesburg and across Knox County:

Galesburg

• Galesburg Public Library, 264 W. Main St.
  Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday: closed; Monday and Tuesday: 9 a.m.–8 p.m.
• Knox County YMCA, 1324 W. Carl Sandburg Drive
  Sunday: 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Monday: 5 a.m.–8 p.m.
• Knox County Housing Authority, 525–527 Iowa Court
  Open 24 hours daily
• Galesburg Public Safety Building, 150 S. Broad St.
  Open 24 hours daily

Knox County

• Williamsfield Fire Station, 200 E. Gale St. — open 24 hours Sunday and Monday
• Oneida Fire Station, 210 N. Sage St. — open 24 hours Sunday and Monday
• Wataga Fire Station, 310 W. Willard St. — open 24 hours Sunday and Monday

Officials say the list of warming centers may expand as conditions change. Updates will be posted on the Knox County Emergency Management Agency Facebook page.
