SPORTS ROUNDUP – Oct. 22

Galesburg High School

Taylor Herchenroder, 7, goes for a bump against Moline Oct. 21 in Thiel Gym.

Volleyball: Moline 2, Galesburg 1
Galesburg’s volleyball team started with a strong first set that built a big lead and never let Moline catch up. However, a sluggish second set cost the Silver Streaks their momentum, and the Maroons took over.

Moline won a competitive third set and defeated the Streaks 2-1 on Oct. 21 in Thiel Gym.

“Now the second set, we just didn’t get after it as quickly, and I think that just ultimately kind of put us one step behind. But I don’t ever think they hung their heads. I don’t think they ever gave up on the ball,” head coach Nicole Kisler said.

“They came out really pushing hard and got ahead of (Moline) quick, and kind of kept that momentum. But that being said, they just work together so well right now in this part of the season, and that’s what you want,” she said.

Sophia Kisler sends a shot back across the net in the Oct. 21 game with Moline High School.

The Streaks were missing Ava Marty for this game, and Caitlin Harrison has been injured this season.

Galesburg has one remaining regular-season game before heading into the regional quarterfinals. Peoria Richwoods is in town at 7 p.m. Oct. 23. Kisler said she has a positive attitude about how her team is playing.

Addison Painter, 4, gets a bump off as Grace Herchenroder, 1, looks on.

“We have just meshed together since the beginning of the season till now,” Kisler said. “We really found each other. We really know each other. They communicate a whole lot better on the court. They’re not running into each other as much, and we’re transitioning better. I just see us doing a really good job in this regional.”

Kisler said the Streaks have some strengths as they move into postseason play.

“I just think our serving is top-notch,” she said. “We’re over 90% almost every game right now. The girls’ passing has been really, really great. We have some of the best hitters in the Western Big Six, and we’re just putting it all together.”

Galesburg plays Streator in the regional quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 in Thiel Gym. The winner will advance to the regional semifinals to play No. 2 seed LaSalle-Peru at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 in Thiel Gym.

Soccer: Rock Island 5, Galesburg 0
PEORIA — Rock Island dominated Galesburg in the Peoria Richwoods Regional semifinal Oct. 21 with a 5-0 victory at Peoria Stadium.

The Rocks got two goals from Jonas Cortez, two from Lawson Zulu and one from Matendo Natani.

The win sends the Rocks to the championship game Oct. 26 against Peoria Richwoods, which defeated Geneseo 2-0. The winner of that match will advance to the Galesburg Sectional on Oct. 28.

Galesburg’s season ends with a 7-12-2 overall record. Rock Island improves to 10-5-1.
