GHS tennis wins rain-shortened match against Alleman

Galesburg defeated Alleman 4-2 in varsity singles play May 4 at Art Fish Courts before the match was halted because of weather conditions.

The Silver Streaks picked up singles victories from Mohamed Shehata, Carter Bohm, Mahmoud Shehata and Jackson Warren.

At No. 1 singles, Mohamed Shehata defeated Cullen Heckenkamp 6-1, 6-3. Bohm won a three-set match at No. 2 singles, beating Chase Eygabroad 6-1, 1-6, 10-5.

Mahmoud Shehata added a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Adam Bell at No. 4 singles, and Warren defeated Cruz Neises 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Alleman’s victories came at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Landon Andrews defeated Carson Stecher 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Jack Milner edged Timothy Tudengjiacuo 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 at No. 5 singles.

The Streaks will host Newman Central Catholic at 4:30 p.m. May 6.

GHS baseball snaps skid with win over Rock Island

TJ Heatherly pitched five strong innings and Galesburg snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Rock Island in a storm-shortened Western Big 6 Conference baseball game May 4.

The Silver Streaks answered Rock Island’s first-inning run with one in the bottom of the inning, then scored twice in the second to take the lead. Rock Island added a run in the fifth before the game was stopped because of lightning concerns.

Heatherly allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out five, walked one and hit two batters while throwing 76 pitches.

Alfred Ayala led Galesburg at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Hayden Ralston went 2-for-2 with a walk and three stolen bases. Gabe Irizarry added a double, while Henry Ikrami, Will Kimmitt and Caden Riley each had one hit.

Drew Hickey drove in a run for Galesburg, which finished with eight hits and four stolen bases.

Galesburg improved to 8-17 overall and 5-6 in the Western Big 6. Rock Island fell to 7-18 and 3-8.

The Silver Streaks are scheduled to play at Rock Island at 4:30 p.m. May 6 before traveling to Reed-Custer for a noon game May 9.

Moline pulls away from Galesburg in girls soccer

Aubree Medinger scored three goals and Moline defeated Galesburg 9-2 in a Western Big 6 Conference girls soccer match May 5.

Galesburg’s Emmanuella Matumona scored both goals for the Silver Streaks, giving her three goals on the season. Haleigh Jezek-Irle and Leairah Harrison each had an assist for Galesburg.

Moline had six players score. Medinger led the Maroons with three goals and an assist. Keeley McKenzie added two goals, while Charli Moore, Ellis Schilb, Graciella Rangel and Jenna Saucedo each scored once.

Jillian Womack had three assists for Moline. Rangel, Saucedo and Adalynn Voss each added one assist.

Galesburg fell to 8-7-1 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Moline improved to 9-7-3.

The Streaks are scheduled to play at Alleman at 6 p.m. May 7 in a game rescheduled from March 31. They will host Canton at 11 a.m. May 9.

Sterling powers past Galesburg in softball

Sterling hit three home runs, including two by Layla Wright, to defeat Galesburg 12-2 in five innings May 5 in a Western Big 6 Conference softball game.

Galesburg scored twice in the first inning, but Sterling answered with two runs in the bottom half and took control from there. The Golden Warriors added two runs in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth.

Galesburg had five hits. Evelin Guel, Layla Shepler, Hannah Barton, Mavery Bland and Taylor Lee each had one hit for the Silver Streaks. Guel and Shepler each drove in a run, while Bland and JaNyah Ferguson each stole a base.

Lee pitched four innings for Galesburg, allowing 12 runs, three earned, on 10 hits. She struck out four, walked one and hit three batters.

Wright led Sterling by going 3-for-3 with two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored. Mya Lira also homered for the Golden Warriors, while Olivia Castillo went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Haley Janssen added a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Sterling finished with 10 hits and improved to 13-11. The Golden Warriors also defeated Galesburg 6-0 earlier this season.

Wright earned the win for Sterling, allowing two runs on five hits in three innings. Lily Martinez pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and retiring all six batters she faced.

Galesburg fell to 4-20. The Silver Streaks are scheduled to play a rescheduled Western Big 6 game at Moline on May 7 before traveling to East Peoria for a 6:30 p.m. game May 11.
