Galesburg soccer continues road shutout streak

The Galesburg girls soccer team posted another road shutout with a 7-0 victory at Sterling on April 7.
The win continued an unusual run for the Silver Streaks. All six victories this season have come on the road, and all six have been shutouts, including three by 7-0 scores.
Madalyn Lardi scored three goals, while Haleigh Jezek-Irle and Leairah Harrison added two each. Jezek-Irle, Lardi and Valeria Chavez recorded assists.
The win was Galesburg’s first in Western Big 6 Conference play and moved the Silver Streaks to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Sterling fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
United Township leads the Western Big 6 at 3-0, a half-game ahead of Alleman (2-0).
The Galesburg and Sterling junior varsity teams tied 0-0.
Galesburg continues its road stretch with matches at Pekin at 6:30 p.m. April 9 and at Metamora at 10 a.m. April 11 before hosting Geneseo at 6 p.m. April 14.
GHS softball falls at Geneseo
Geneseo scored three runs in the first inning and added five more in the fourth to defeat Galesburg 9-0 in a Western Big 6 Conference softball game April 7.
The Silver Streaks managed three hits and fell to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Galesburg returns home to face Sterling on April 9 and Canton on April 11. Both games are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Geneseo finished with 12 hits and broke the game open after taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Maple Leafs added five runs in the fourth and another in the sixth.
Avayah Bridgewater doubled for Galesburg, while Mary Moore and Tamryn Davis each singled. The Silver Streaks drew two walks but struck out 12 times.

Taylor Lee pitched all six innings for Galesburg, allowing 12 hits and nine runs — eight earned — while walking five and striking out three.
Penny Kline led Geneseo, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Addison Snell had two hits and two RBIs, Megan Hursman added two hits and three RBIs, and K. Wassenhove and Remlee Dwyer each drove in a run.
Snell earned the win, striking out eight over four innings while allowing one hit and two walks. Wassenhove pitched the final three innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Sandburg sweeps Sauk Valley in conference softball

Carl Sandburg College completed a season sweep of Sauk Valley Community College on April 7 in Galesburg, winning both games of an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader 11-4 and 11-3. The second game ended after five innings.
In the opener, Sandburg scored three runs in the first inning and broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the fourth.
Jaylynn Hamilton and Jalie Eller scored on an error in the first, and Madalynn Knapp added an RBI double to make it 3-0. After Sauk Valley tied the game, Sandburg responded in the fourth.
Hannah Pyle hit a two-run double, Emma Racka added a sacrifice fly and Payton Ruggles followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 8-4.

Hamilton went 3 for 5 with three runs scored and one RBI. Eller finished 2 for 5 with two runs and a stolen base. Knapp went 2 for 3 with a walk, one run and one RBI, while Ruggles was 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI.
Cheyanne Rodgers earned the win, pitching a complete game while allowing two earned runs and striking out a season-high seven.
In Game 2, Sandburg used a six-run third inning to pull away.
Tied 2-2, Racka singled home Jordyn Climer with the go-ahead run. Ruggles and Rodgers added RBI singles, Reese Poole followed with a two-run single, and Hamilton capped the inning with an RBI single for an 8-2 lead.
Rodgers added a three-run double in the fourth to make it 11-3.
Ruggles, Rodgers and Poole combined to go 5 for 7 with four runs scored and eight RBIs. Pyle and Racka each went 2 for 3.
Climer earned the win in Game 2, striking out four over five innings without issuing a walk.
Sandburg’s scheduled April 9 doubleheader at Highland was canceled and will not be made up. The Chargers will compete in the Conference Clash on April 11-12 in Ottawa, opening at 1 p.m. Saturday against Oakton.

Beloit sweeps Knox baseball

Knox College dropped both games of a Midwest Conference baseball doubleheader to Beloit on April 7 in Galesburg, falling 3-2 and 15-6.
The Prairie Fire fell to 4-21 overall and 2-6 in conference play. Knox hosts Monmouth for a doubleheader April 11 and a single game April 12.
In the opener, Knox tied the game in the third on an unearned run after falling behind 1-0. Beloit regained the lead in the fourth, but Owen Shannon drove in Aidan McMurtrie with a groundout to tie the score again.
Beloit scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.
Tyler Kemp led Knox with two hits, while Shannon and Clayton Rice each drove in a run.
Jacob Halseth allowed two runs over six innings while striking out four. He did not factor in the decision.

In the second game, Knox built a 3-0 lead through two innings.
McMurtrie delivered a two-run single in the first inning, and Thomas Wilmot added an RBI single in the second.
Beloit responded with five runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to take control. Knox scored twice in the seventh, but Beloit added six runs in the eighth to end the game by the 10-run rule.
Halseth led Knox with four hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Nicholas Nitti added two hits, and McMurtrie drove in two runs.
Monmouth sweeps Knox softball
Knox College dropped both games of a Midwest Conference softball doubleheader to Monmouth on April 7, falling 3-2 and 5-2.
The losses dropped the Prairie Fire to 5-13 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
In the opener, Knox took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Chelsea McKee singled home Maddie Hicks. Monmouth scored twice in the fourth, and Knox tied the game in the sixth when Kara Burwell scored on an error.
Monmouth scored the winning run in the seventh.
Janet Lentini pitched a complete game for Knox, allowing three runs while striking out six. McKee led the Prairie Fire with three hits.
In Game 2, Knox scored twice in the first inning as Victoria Torres singled home Taylor Goudschaal and McKee.
Monmouth scored once in the third, added two runs in the fourth and two more in the seventh.
Torres drove in both Knox runs, and seven Prairie Fire players recorded one hit apiece.
Knox returns to action April 11 with a doubleheader at Lake Forest. The Prairie Fire then travel to Beloit for a doubleheader Sunday before hosting Eureka on April 15.
