Late Rock Island goal sinks Galesburg soccer in overtime
Galesburg was 41 seconds away from a Western Big 6 Conference win.
Instead, Rock Island tied the match on a free kick, then scored twice in the first overtime to hand the Silver Streaks a 3-1 loss at CBI Bank & Trust Stadium on April 28.
Galesburg led nearly the entire match after freshman Haleigh Jezek-Irle scored in the first half off an assist from senior Leairah Harrison. The Silver Streaks held that 1-0 advantage through most of regulation before Rock Island tied the match in the final minute.

Under IHSA and Western Big 6 rules, regular-season matches tied after regulation use two 10-minute overtime periods.
The Rocks took control in overtime, scoring twice in the first extra period and keeping Galesburg off the board the rest of the way.
Galesburg coach Jessica Jones said the late goal was difficult to absorb, but she was encouraged by the team’s effort.

“We talked about the progress we’ve made in our grit and staying in the game no matter what and continuing to fight,” Jones said. “That was the biggest step forward from last week. The entire team played the full time plus the full overtime the best they could. They left everything out on the field, and I can’t be mad or disappointed in that.”
Rock Island’s goals came from Sophia Rodgers, Izzy Spurgetis and Courtney Walls. AJ Stewart added an assist as the Rocks improved to 3-9.
Galesburg defender Brooke Fell said the Silver Streaks stayed together after the tying goal.
“We just had to keep pushing ourselves because we knew we could still win this,” Fell said. “It only just set us back, but we still fought to the end.”
Jones said Rock Island executed well on the equalizer.
“When they tied the game, we lost our composure for a minute,” Jones said. “They got through. It was a great free kick, and there wasn’t a whole lot we could do about it. It’s unfortunate when it happens late, but it does happen. Kudos to Rock Island. They played a great game.”
The loss dropped Galesburg to 7-5-1 and 1-4 in the WB6.
Galesburg is scheduled to host Limestone at 4:30 p.m. April 30 and Manual at 11 a.m. May 2.
