Maxwell J. Burton, 29, of Galesburg, was charged in Knox County Court with burglary and theft following an early-morning robbery, police said.

Police took a Galesburg man into custody early Tuesday after a robbery at a local convenience store.

Officers responded to Beck’s, 1581 E. Main St., at 2:20 a.m. after a masked suspect demanded money from the employee on duty, according to a news release from the Galesburg Police Department. The employee complied, and the suspect left the store on foot with money and other items. Officers later located the suspect in the area and took him into custody.

While searching the area, officers located Maxwell J. Burton, 29, and found “items of evidentiary value” in his possession, police said. Officers took Burton into custody for burglary and transported him to the Knox County Jail.

Later in the day, Knox County prosecutors charged Burton in Knox County Court with Class 2 felony burglary and misdemeanor theft under $500. He was released and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 10.

Records show this is not Burton’s first brush with the law in Knox County. In 2015, a court sentenced him to three years in prison for what the Register-Mail referred to at the time as his “involvement in a two-month-long string of burglaries in Knox and nearby counties.”

In exchange for his guilty plea to one count each of burglary and unlawful possession of a firearm, the state dropped three counts of burglary, three counts of theft, and one count each of criminal damage to property and filing a false report of motor vehicle theft.

He also has served time for burglary convictions in Peoria and Henry counties.

Note: A charge is an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
