Pekin ends Galesburg girls’ scoring streak

Galesburg’s season-long streak without being shut out ended April 9 as the Silver Streaks lost 7-2 in a nonconference match at Pekin.
The loss was the first on the road for Galesburg, which has played seven of its first eight matches away from home. The Silver Streaks have one more road contest before returning home.
The teams were tied 2-2 at halftime, but injuries took their toll in the second half, coach Jessica Jones said, and the Streaks were unable to keep pace with the Dragons.
Haleigh Jezek-Irle and Madalyn Lardi each scored for Galesburg, while Emmanuella Matumona added an assist. Jezek-Irle and Lardi have combined for 41 goals this season.
Galesburg fell to 6-2, while Pekin improved to 5-3-1 with its third straight win.
The Silver Streaks play at Metamora at 10 a.m. April 11 and host Western Big 6 Conference opponent Geneseo at 6 p.m. April 14.
Sterling scores late to put away Galesburg softball
Sterling broke open a one-run game with four runs in the sixth inning to defeat Galesburg 6-0 April 9 in Western Big 6 Conference softball action.
Sterling scored in the first inning, but Galesburg pitcher Taylor Lee and the defense held the Golden Warriors in check until the sixth. Sterling added another run in the seventh.
Sterling pitcher Lily Martinez shut out the Silver Streaks on two hits and two walks.
Galesburg coach Andrea Sampson said the Silver Streaks played more sharply early but again struggled to sustain momentum offensively.

“I think they have learned,” Sampson said. “At the beginning it was hard for them to face adversity. They were trying to face it alone. Whereas now they’ve learned to apply it together, facing adversity together.”
Lee pitched a complete game, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out eight.
Layla Shepler and Mary Moore each had a hit for Galesburg.
Sterling was led by Layla Wright, who scored twice, while Mya Lira and Haley Janssen each homered.

The Silver Streaks host Canton at 4:30 p.m. April 10 and Western Big 6 opponent Moline at 4:30 p.m. April 14.
