Sports Roundup
The Galesburg girls basketball team moved into first place in the Western Big 6 Conference with a 76-71 double-overtime win over Quincy on Dec. 11 at John Thiel Gymnasium.

The victory improved the Silver Streaks to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while Quincy fell to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the league.
Galesburg rallied from a 10-point deficit late in the third quarter and appeared to have secured a regulation win before Quincy tied the game at the free-throw line with a fraction of a second remaining, forcing overtime.
After a back-and-forth first overtime, the Streaks took control in the second extra period and did not trail again. Several Quincy turnovers and a pair of Galesburg steals helped seal the win, as three Blue Devils players fouled out down the stretch.

Quincy controlled much of the first half, using its size and defense to limit Galesburg’s interior scoring. The teams were tied after the first quarter before Quincy took a 33-28 lead into halftime and extended its advantage early in the third.
Grace Herchenroder helped keep the Streaks within reach during that stretch, knocking down five 3-pointers over the second and third quarters. She finished with a team-high 21 points.
Jozelyn Kilgore added 16 points, Zaniyah Carter scored 13, and Taylor Herchenroder finished with 11. Ella Herchenroder and Lily Furrow chipped in eight points apiece.
Head coach Lexi Demott said the team stayed committed to its game plan despite early struggles and late adversity.

Freshman Rylan Carton led all scorers with 18 points, scoring nine in each half and hitting one 3-pointer per period. He went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Sophomore Matt Bockman tallied a season-best 11 points, hitting one 3-pointer and going 6-for-8 at the line. It was his first double-digit scoring performance since last season’s regular-season finale against Olive-Harvey.
