The City of Galesburg has declared a snow emergency beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, as the region braces for several rounds of snow and dangerous cold.

The National Weather Service is forecasting 2–5 inches of snow beginning Thursday afternoon and tapering off by early Friday. Another 3–5 inches is possible Saturday, with temperatures plunging over the weekend. Lows could reach -10 degrees, and wind chills may fall to -25 to -30 by late Saturday into Sunday morning.
During the snow emergency, parking is prohibited on all city streets, except in the central business district. Vehicles left on streets may be ticketed or towed. The restrictions will remain in place until all streets have been cleared.
City crews began pretreating roads Thursday and will start plowing once snow reaches 2 inches. Information on snow-removal procedures and emergency alerts is available on the city’s website.
