Galesburg boys cruise to 69–25 win in tourney opener

The Silver Streaks came out firing against Madison and never let up, defeating the visiting Trojans 69–25 on Nov. 28 in the first game of an abbreviated Galesburg Thanksgiving tournament.

The tournament — which included Limestone, Madison, Little Village, United Township and Moline — had all games scheduled for Nov. 29 canceled because of a predicted snowstorm.

The Streaks opened the game with a pass from Keigen Crummer to Cesaire Bile for an uncontested reverse layup, and Galesburg controlled the pace from there, scoring the first 16 points before Madison got on the board.

Cesaire Bile, 10, who scored 17 points, takes down a defensive rebound against the Madison Trojans.

“It was one of those games where we came out with a high emotion; we came out with a lot of energy, executed well right off the bat, played some great defense and got ahead,” head coach Taylor Thiel said. “So then the rest of it was, all right, now we’ve got to stay focused.”

Galesburg did. After scoring 22 points in the first quarter, the Streaks added 21 points in both the second and third. A pressing defense held Madison to 5, 5 and 11 points through three quarters. With the game decided, Galesburg outscored Madison 5–4 in the fourth.

Thiel said he was pleased with the ball movement.

“I had another balanced scoring sheet,” he said. “The guys were distributing the ball. Keigen, I think, had 11 assists tonight, which means he was getting everybody involved, and it showed again on paper.”

Rakhim McCellan, 32, goes up for two of the seven points he scored against Madison Nov. 28.

The 44-point margin came on the heels of a 26-point win in the season opener against Limestone. Following that game, Thiel said he wanted to see improved rebounding.

“Some of the things we wanted to clean up were on the boards,” he said. “I thought we did a pretty good job tonight. We did a little bit better on the first-pass pressure off the point guard, getting in the passing lanes. I think it made it tougher for Madison to get into their offensive flow, specifically that they couldn’t reverse the ball.”

Bile led the Streaks with 17 points, and Jaxon Wyatt added 15. Madison was led by Terion Wilbourn with 11 points. Galesburg went 11-for-15 at the free-throw line.

As part of a pressing defense the Silver Streaks used against the Trojans, Stone Thiel, 2, stays tight on Sincere Collins, 0.

Galesburg scoring: Bile 17, Wyatt 15, Tobi Kivunina 9, Stone Thiel 8, Keigen Crummer 7, Rahkim McCellan 7, Demetrious Watson 6.

For Madison, it was the Trojans’ second loss of the day. Earlier, Madison fell to United Township 60–23. In other first-day tournament games: Moline defeated Limestone 64–35, Moline defeated Little Village 57–28, and United Township beat Little Village 48–35.

Galesburg (2–0) will host Pekin at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 and travel to Alleman for a 7 p.m. game Dec. 5.
