United Township shuts down Galesburg offense

Galesburg managed just two hits April 6 and dropped a 4-0 Western Big 6 Conference baseball game to United Township at home.

United Township scored two runs in the second inning and added two more in the third. Galesburg finished with two hits and struck out eight times.

Coach Jeremy Pickrel said the Streaks are putting too much pressure on their defense and pitching by not producing at the plate.

“We’re just not doing anything offensively right now,” Pickrel said. “It puts pressure on your defense and pitching when you’re not coming through at the plate.”

Galesburg had one of its better chances when it put runners on first and second with no outs but could not cash in. Pickrel said that has become a recurring problem.

“We can’t string together hits, and we’re not going to win games if we can’t get hits and get guys on base,” he said.

Noah Nalley had one of Galesburg’s hits and also gave the Silver Streaks a lift on the mound, throwing three scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts. Starter Caden Riley worked the first four innings, allowing four runs, three earned, while striking out six.

United Township finished with six hits. Zach Darras had two hits and two RBIs for the Panthers. He also threw a complete-game shutout, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out eight.

Pickrel said there was at least one encouraging sign despite the result.

“I thought the swings that we did take were shorter, they weren’t as long,” he said. “But other than that, not a whole lot of positives come out of there.”

Galesburg is 2-10 overall and 0-3 in the WB6. United Township improved to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Galesburg will get another shot at United Township on April 8, this time on the road. The Silver Streaks will host Morton in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. April 11.
