GALESBURG — The city announced the downtown revitalization project on Simmons Street, the Prairie Street intersection and the adjacent parking lot is expected to be completed this fall.
In the coming weeks, crews will finish work on the Kellogg Street intersection, curbs and gutters, and all ADA-compliant sidewalks.
By mid-September, concrete work is expected to be complete. Crews will also grade the east half of the parking lot and prepare the road for asphalt.
By the end of September, asphalt will be laid on the remaining portions of the project. The material must cure for 10 days before pavement markings can be applied. Markings are scheduled for early October, with the roadway and parking lot expected to reopen to traffic by the end of that month.
The project began March 31 and is funded by a $2.1 million Rebuild Illinois Downtown and Main Street Grant. Completed work includes Simmons Street, the Prairie Street intersection and the west half of the parking lot. Storm sewer work is done, and decorative lighting has been installed.
According to the city, the overall scope includes asphalt resurfacing of the roadway and parking lot, ADA-compliant sidewalks, improvements to curbs, gutters and storm sewers, landscaping and tree planting, benches and trash receptacles, a pedestrian canopy and decorative lighting.
“We’re grateful for the Rebuild Illinois grant that made this project possible,” said Aaron Gavin, director of public works. “We appreciate residents’ patience during construction and look forward to a more vibrant, accessible downtown.”
The total anticipated cost is $2.5 million, including a $2,082,500 Rebuild Illinois Downtown and Main Streets Grant. About $400,000 in local funds are contributing to the overall cost.
Gunther Construction is the contractor. The project was managed by city project manager Jamie West.
