Carl Sandburg College teams wrapped up August with mixed results across volleyball, soccer, cross-country, and golf.


🏐 Volleyball sits at 3-5 for the season

The 25th-ranked Sandburg volleyball team had little issue in sweeping Kishwaukee 25-14, 25-10, 25-17 on Wednesday in the Chargers’ home and Arrowhead Conference opener. Here, Harlee Hainds (5) and Madalynn Knapp (3) protect the net.

The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team split two matches to close out August and open the season at 3-5 heading into September.

No. 8 Illinois Central defeated No. 25 Sandburg 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 26-28, 25-22) on Aug. 28.

One night earlier, Sandburg swept Kishwaukee 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-17) in its home and Arrowhead Conference opener.

⚽ Soccer loses first match

Madison defeated the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team 2-0 on Aug. 30 in Madison, Wis., dropping the Chargers to 1-1 overall.

🏃 Cross-country wins first meet

The Carl Sandburg College women’s cross-country team won its own 3K Joan Jepngetich Memorial Invite on Aug. 30, scoring 25 points in its season opener. Linda Koech placed third in 13 minutes, 53 seconds.

Next up for the women’s team is the Prairie State Invite at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

The Sandburg men’s cross-country team finished second in the 6K Joan Jepngetich Memorial Invite, also on Aug. 30 in Galesburg. Finnegan Martin finished 11th overall in 24:56.

The men compete next at the Prairie Stars Invite at 6 p.m. Sept. 5.


⛳ Golf: Men 7th, women 10th

Blake Harvey tied for 26th to help the Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team place seventh overall at the Heartland Fall Invitational on Aug. 27 at The Den at Deer Creek. The Chargers finished with 632 strokes, behind first-place Millikin’s 592.

Next for the men is the Battle of the Mississippi on Sept. 29-30 at Fyre Lake.

The Sandburg women’s golf team placed 10th with 703 strokes at the 13-team Highland Championship on Aug. 31-Sept. 1 in Rock Island. Augustana won the event. Olivia Seei tied for 25th overall with rounds of 84 and 85.

The women return Sept. 13-14 at the Fighting Scot Invitational at Gibson Woods in Monmouth.
