Galesburg swimmers took first in nine of 12 events to win their home dual meet with Peoria Richwoods on Sept. 27.

Lily Furrow won two individual events and was a member of three winning relay teams.

The team competes at United Township High School on Sept. 30.

Cross country

Sandburg men 5th, women 7th
Andrew Peterson set a personal record while leading the Chargers at the Heartland Invitational on Sept. 26 at Maxwell Park in Normal.

  • Peterson placed 10th in the men’s 8-kilometer run with a time of 28:02.4.
  • Finn Martin finished 42nd in 32:25.4, a personal record.
  • Linda Koech paced the women’s team in 23:24.2.
  • Faith Rotich (25:55.7) was 43rd, Sheila Cheruiyot (26:25.2) was 44th, and Grace Maiyo (27:01.0) was 47th with a PR.

Parkland’s Aleigha Garrison won the women’s race in 18:41.7, and Lake Land was the team champion. Heartland’s Kaleb Kilgore won the men’s race in 26:44.5 as the host Hawks swept the top three spots.

Sandburg’s men finished fifth overall. The Chargers next compete Oct. 11 at the Arrowhead Conference Championships hosted by Illinois Valley.

Volleyball

Sandburg 0-3 at Kankakee
Abigail Shaffer set a career high with 17 kills against Moraine Valley, but the Chargers dropped three matches at the Kankakee Quad on Sept. 27.

Men’s soccer

Sandburg 3, Triton 1
Alberto Fernandez Do Carmo, Luis Garcia and Valentin Kretschmer each had a goal and an assist as the Chargers (6-2-2) defeated Triton on Sept. 28 in River Grove.

Keeper Linus Richtberg made five saves on six shots for his second straight win in net.

Sandburg hosts Wisconsin-Whitewater-Rock County at noon Oct. 2.


Knox College

Men’s golf

Gabriel Newman sank a pair of birdies, including one on his final hole of the day, the par-5 530-yard ninth, to go with 10 pars at the Stateline Shootout on Sept. 28.

Knox 12th
Knox shot a 41-over 329 in the first round of the Stateline Shootout hosted by Mount St. Joseph University in Harrison, Ohio, on Sept. 27. The Prairie Fire improved with a 24-over 312 on Sunday to tie for 12th in the 16-team field.

  • Senior Pranav Nandakumar tied for sixth with a 147 (+3) after a 1-under 71 in the final round.
  • Senior Gabriel Newman shot 77, nine strokes better than his opening round.
  • Junior Nathaniel Zug carded a 78 with 12 pars and a birdie.

Shenandoah University won the team title at 591, 15 strokes ahead of Pitt-Greensburg.

Knox competes next at the Central Fall Classic Oct. 6-7 in Pella, Iowa.

Men’s soccer

Lake Forest 2, Knox 0
Lake Forest (9-0, 1-0 MWC) scored twice in the first half to defeat Knox (4-2-3, 0-1 MWC) in the Midwest Conference opener on Sept. 27.

Knox has been shut out in consecutive matches after scoring in its first seven games. The Prairie Fire host Illinois College on Oct. 1.

The Foresters (10-0, 1-0 MWC) outshot Knox (3-5-1, 0-1 MWC) 25-5 in a 4-0 win Sept. 27.

The Prairie Fire have lost three straight following a four-match unbeaten streak. They host Illinois College on Sept. 30.
