Carl Sandburg College

Schweigert sets career high in sweep
Sophomore Emma Schweigert set a career high for kills in the Sandburg volleyball team’s 25-22, 25-20, 25-14 sweep at Illinois Valley in Oglesby on Oct. 15.

Schweigert put down a team-leading 11 kills and posted a .308 hitting percentage for the Chargers in the victory. Her previous best was eight kills, set last week at Highland and Aug. 22 against Des Moines Area.

Sandburg (14-17 overall, 6-2 Arrowhead Conference) also got double-digit kills from sophomore Abigail Shaffer, who collected 10 to go with 15 digs and two aces.

Chargers gear up for ranked opponent
Setter Quinn Rexroat had four of the Chargers’ eight aces in the victory and finished with 32 assists. Three other players joined Shaffer in double figures in digs: Addison Gillen (15), Jalie Eller (12) and Macy Nolan (10). Nolan’s 10 digs were the freshman’s most in a match this season.

Sandburg had four blocks on the night, with three coming from Harlee Hainds. The Chargers will host No. 12 Sauk Valley on Oct. 22 before heading to Champaign to compete in the Parkland Region Crossover tournament Oct. 24-25.

Knox College

Penalty kick sinks Prairie Fire
Neither men’s soccer team from Knox College nor host Cornell College could find the back of the net despite firing shots consistently through the match. It took a penalty in the box that gave the Rams (5-7-1, 3-1-1 Midwest Conference) their opportunity, and they took advantage of it, defeating the visiting Prairie Fire (6-4-4, 2-3-1 MWC) 1-0 on Oct. 15.

The two teams combined to attempt 37 shots, including a season-high 19 by Knox, but only the penalty kick off the foot of Cornell’s Justice Toledo made it into the goal.

Knox looks to rebound at home
Knox ended up playing down a man for the final 18-plus minutes after junior Apostolos Karamperis was whistled for his second yellow card of the afternoon. Even so, the Fire managed five more shots before time expired.

Knox returns to Jorge Prats Field on Oct. 18 to host Lawrence University (0-8-4, 0-4-1 MWC) before finishing the regular season on Nov. 1 when Grinnell comes to town.
