Several student organizations at Carl Sandburg College were recently recognized by the Illinois House of Representatives for thousands of hours of volunteer service and community engagement.

According to the resolution and college officials, 105 students participated in volunteer activities between August 2024 and March 2026, completing 4,261 verified service hours across 349 opportunities. The work included education initiatives, civic and community engagement, health-related efforts and children’s services. Organizers estimated the volunteer impact at more than $148,000.

Swanson presented the resolution May 8 at Sandburg.

“This resolution says a lot about everyone in this room and says a lot about Sandburg,” Swanson said in a statement released by the college. “It just astounded me how much you do here with that volunteerism, that leadership, that community.”

The recognition also highlights Sandburg’s emphasis on student leadership and community service beyond the classroom, an approach college officials and lawmakers said has produced thousands of volunteer hours across the region. The resolution additionally commended Sandburg’s Student Development division for helping foster leadership and service among students.
