GHS boys remain unbeaten; Knox women cruise past Monmouth

Bile’s 27 points lead GHS boys to fourth win

The Galesburg boys basketball team continued its dominant early-season run with a 75-55 road victory at Alleman on Dec. 5.

Césaire Bile scored 27 points, spread across all four quarters, to lead the Silver Streaks to the win.

The victory kept Galesburg unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Western Big 6. Each win this season has come by 20 or more points, and the Streaks are averaging 73.3 points per game. Alleman fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Galesburg jumped out to a 22-11 first-quarter lead behind six points from Bile, five from Keigen Crummer and four from Jaxon Wyatt.

Alleman stayed within reach behind 3-point shooting from Jack Wendt and Miles Granet. Wendt, who was scoreless in the first quarter, finished with 23 points.

Two 3-pointers early in the second quarter cut the deficit to 32-27 with about 2:30 left in the half, but Galesburg tightened defensively and outscored Alleman 8-4 down the stretch to take a 43-32 lead into halftime.

Bile and Crummer combined for 11 points early in the third quarter as the Streaks extended the lead to 54-35. Galesburg carried a 59-41 advantage into the fourth.

After another Alleman 3-pointer to open the final quarter, Rakhim McCellan, Bile and Stone Thiel answered with eight straight points to make it 67-44. The Pioneers closed within 69-55 before Eden Mayala scored the final six points to seal the win.

The Streaks return home for a 7 p.m. game against Rock Island on Dec. 9 and a 7 p.m. matchup with United Township on Dec. 12. Their Dec. 6 game against Rockford Jefferson was moved to 6 p.m. on Jan. 2.


Streaks return to winning ways versus Moline

The Galesburg girls basketball team returned to the win column with a 52-42 road victory over Moline on Dec. 6.

It was the fourth consecutive road game for the Silver Streaks after opening the season with four straight home games.

Galesburg improved to 7-1 after dropping its first game to Sterling despite a strong third-quarter rally. Moline fell to 4-3.

No statistics were available at press time.

The win leaves the Streaks at 2-1 in the Western Big 6, tied for second behind 2-0 Quincy, which visits Galesburg for a 7 p.m. game Dec. 11.

Rock Valley rides hot first half to defeat Charger men

Led by a hot first half and a big edge on the glass, Rock Valley handed the Sandburg men’s basketball team a 92-58 road loss Dec. 6 in Rockford.

The Golden Eagles, receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II rankings, led 45-31 at halftime after shooting 52%, including 8-for-17 from 3-point range.

Rylan Carton scored 16 points to lead three Sandburg players in double figures. The freshman from Sherrard went 5-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-7 at the foul line and added four assists.

Sophomore Ralph Wires finished with 14 points, while Keauntrey Barnes added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Rock Valley’s Jajuan Cozark scored a game-high 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting. JT Samuels added 23 as the Golden Eagles outrebounded the Chargers 43-26.

Sandburg returns to action at 6 p.m. Dec. 8 vs. John Wood.


Charger women fall to nationally ranked Rock Valley

Nationally ranked Rock Valley snapped the Sandburg women’s three-game winning streak with a 101-58 road loss Dec. 6.

The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 19 in NJCAA Division II, opened a 32-11 lead after the first quarter.

Sophomore Antonia Kisler led the Chargers with 16 points on 7-for-16 shooting and added seven rebounds.

Paige Huffman scored eight points, and Camryn Atterberg added seven. Freshman Ryleigh Clark finished with a season-best seven points in 16 minutes off the bench.

Amadea Montijo scored a game-high 26 for Rock Valley, which had six players reach double figures.

Sandburg returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 10 vs. Spoon River.


Knox College

Knox women cruise past Monmouth

The Knox College women’s basketball team opened with runs of seven, 10 and 20 points and cruised to an 88-52 Midwest Conference victory over visiting Monmouth on Dec. 6 at Memorial Gymnasium.

Junior Bria Medina, honored before the game for surpassing 1,000 career points earlier this season, scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Prairie Fire (3-4, 2-1 MWC). Monmouth fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Knox held Monmouth to 26.4% shooting from the floor and 18.8% from 3-point range. The Prairie Fire shot 50% and made seven 3-pointers.

Medina connected on 10 of 13 field goals and made all 11 of her free throws.

Knox returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at Millikin University.


Fighting Scots hold off Knox men

Monmouth edged the Knox men’s basketball team 71-64 on Dec. 6 in Midwest Conference action at Memorial Gymnasium.

Monmouth (6-2, 2-0 MWC) made 25 of 32 free throws. Knox fell to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.

The Prairie Fire finished 17 of 26 at the foul line.

Aydan Ayer led Knox with 14 points off the bench. Denim Tuala-Fata scored a season-high 10 points before fouling out.

Senior Russell Wright led all players with eight rebounds as Monmouth edged Knox 41-39 on the boards.

Both teams shot under 40% from the floor. Monmouth made six 3-pointers to three for Knox.

Before the game, the teams paid tribute to Jordan Ball, a Galesburg junior high teacher and coach and a 2021 Monmouth graduate who died in a weather-related auto accident.

Knox returns to action at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at Greenville University.
