Galesburg High School

Streaks stay unbeaten with road win

Galesburg’s first road game followed the pattern of its four home wins this season, with the Silver Streaks girls basketball team dominating Alleman 58-23 on Nov. 25.

The game was also the Streaks’ first Western Big 6 matchup. They are now 1-0 in the conference and 5-0 overall. The Pioneers dropped to 2-4 and 0-1 in league play.

Although not sharp offensively in the first quarter, Galesburg relied on its pressure defense to hold Alleman in check. Through steals, errant passes and traveling violations, the Pioneers turned the ball over nine times in the period.

Zaniyah Carter, who led the Streaks with 11 points, capitalized on some of those turnovers, getting a steal for a layup and adding two under-the-basket field goals to put Galesburg ahead. Alleman pulled within 9-6, but Galesburg began to pull away and led 17-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter also followed the pattern of previous games. The Streaks’ defense fell back into a man-to-man that remained effective while the offense became more productive. Galesburg stretched its lead to 39-14 at halftime.

The second half saw Galesburg continue to build its lead, including shutting out the Pioneers in the fourth quarter.

In their five games, the Silver Streaks have outscored opponents 310-179. All but one of their wins were by 20-plus points. Their victory over Metamora — whose only loss is to Galesburg — was by 16.

Galesburg scoring: Khloe May 6, Zaniyah Carter 11, Taylor Herchenroder 9, Grace Herchenroder 9, Jozalyn Kilgore 7, Lily Furrow 6, Eleanor Johnson 9, Keerah Cooper 1.

Alleman’s Megan Hulke scored 13 of the Pioneers’ 23 points.

Galesburg’s sophomore girls team defeated Alleman 42-35.

The Silver Streaks host their second doubleheader Nov. 29, with a noon game against Winnebago and a 7:15 p.m. game against Peoria Notre Dame.
