
Streaks shine in final home meet
In the final team home meet for retiring Ray VanHootegem, the Galesburg head coach saw his Silver Streaks finish second to Washington, 321-278, in the 29th annual Galesburg Invitational at Mustain Pool.
The 200-yard medley relay of Camdyn Miller, Hayden Johnson, Lily Furrow and Macie Nelson, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Faith Warren, Nelson, Johnson and Furrow won their respective races.
Individual winners in the invitational included Johnson in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, Furrow in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, Warren in the 500-yard freestyle, and Miller in the 100-yard backstroke.

The Streaks compete in the Western Big 6 Conference meet on Oct. 25 at Moline High School. Diving begins at 8:30 a.m., and swimming begins at noon. The Illinois High School Association state championships will be held Nov. 14-15.

After winning all four matches at the Dixon Invitational on Oct. 8, the Galesburg volleyball team had the tables turned, losing four matches at the Limestone Classic on Oct. 18.
The Silver Streaks lost to Mahomet-Seymour 2-0, Peoria Manual 2-0, Providence Catholic 2-1 and Glenwood 2-0. The losses leave GHS with an overall record of 12-19 as the team heads into its final matches.
Galesburg closes the regular season with home matches Oct. 21 against Moline and Oct. 23 versus Peoria Richwoods.
The Streaks will host a Class 3A regional at Thiel Gym on Oct. 27, taking on Streator at 6 p.m. The winner will advance to face No. 2-seeded LaSalle-Peru on Oct. 28 in the regional semifinals.

On Oct. 13 at Dunlap, Galesburg lost 25-22, 22-25, 19-25. Grace Herchenroder and Ella Herchenroder each had two aces, Evelin Guel had 11 assists, Grace Herchenroder led in digs, Macey Huft had six kills, and Ava Marty had four blocks.
On Oct. 14, the Silver Streaks lost at home to Geneseo 24-26, 22-25. Grace Herchenroder, Taylor Adams and Sophia Kisler each had an ace. Evelin Guel had 10 assists, Ella Herchenroder had 15 digs, Taylor Herchenroder had eight kills, and Ava Marty had six blocks.
On Oct. 16, GHS won at Sterling 25-22, 25-21. Grace Herchenroder had two aces, Evelin Guel had 11 assists, Grace Herchenroder had 12 digs, Taylor Adams had five kills, and Adams and Taylor Herchenroder had two blocks.

The Chargers’ men’s soccer team posted its second straight shutout and eighth of the season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Kishwaukee on Oct. 17.
Alberto Fernandez Do, Valentin Kretschmer and Ramon Ponga each scored first-period goals before Luis Garcia added two in the second period. Linus Richtberg worked in goal for Sandburg, stopping five shots.

Sandburg remains undefeated at home with a 7-0 record and is 11-2-3 overall.
The Chargers end the regular season Oct. 21 by hosting Wilbur Wright College at 4 p.m. The Region IV tournament begins at 2 p.m. Oct. 29 at the home of the higher-seeded team.

An overcast afternoon turned stormy in more ways than one for the Knox College football team as the Prairie Fire suffered a 64-14 defeat at Illinois College on Oct. 18 in Jacksonville.
The Blueboys (4-2, 3-2 Midwest Conference) amassed 539 yards—372 on the ground—while limiting Knox (2-4, 2-3 MWC) to 149 yards before the game ended with 5:44 to play due to lightning.

Chase Lucas’ touchdown catch was the first of his career; he scored his first career touchdown of any kind in the win at Beloit.
Quarterback Reese Miller had a rough day behind center, completing 3-of-17 passes for 21 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. First-year student Jahprece Joseph led the Knox defense with seven tackles, one going for a loss.
Knox has won eight straight games against its next opponent, Lawrence University (0-6, 0-5 MWC), but to extend that streak to nine, the Prairie Fire will have to do it on the road, as it did in a 35-34 win last year. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. Oct. 25.

While junior Elle Haddon posted a season-high attack percentage of .318 with nine kills and just two errors, the Knox College volleyball team was unable to keep up with visiting Lawrence University on Senior Night at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Vikings (17-10, 2-2 Midwest Conference) defeated the Prairie Fire (3-21, 1-2 MWC) in straight sets, 14-25, 20-25, 17-25, on Oct. 17.
A trio of Prairie Fire players were busy on the back line trying to hold the Vikings at bay, with sophomores Zoe Thunhurst and Bri Holland providing 13 digs and senior Sam Black a dozen more. First-year Cilia Conley was a force up front for the Fire with a season-high four blocks.
After falling behind two sets to none, the Knox College volleyball team mustered the energy to take the third set before succumbing to visiting Ripon College on Oct. 18 at Memorial Gymnasium, 25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 25-13.
The Red Hawks improved to 8-15 on the season and 2-3 in the Midwest Conference, while the Prairie Fire dropped to 3-22 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Junior Elle Haddon led the team in kills (8) for the sixth straight match, while Jabor Jahn added seven. Bri Holland contributed a double-double with 11 assists and 11 digs, not to mention four aces. Sophomore Zoe Thunhurst led a trio of Prairie Fire players in double-digit digs with 13.
Knox won’t have to travel far following its eight-match home stand, with a midweek showdown against rival Monmouth College (7-12, 1-2 MWC) at 7 p.m. Oct. 22.
The Knox College cross-country teams ran in the Augustana Interregional Invitational in Rock Island on Oct. 18 in preparation for the Midwest Conference Championships, which take place in two weeks.

The Knox men placed 22nd in the Blue 8K race out of 32 participating schools, while the women took 25th out of 28 in the 6K.
Senior Lance Miller was the top finisher for either Prairie Fire squad, running the race in 25:55.8 to claim ninth out of 440 entrants. First-year Elsie Conwell on the women’s team ran a personal best 25:15.8 in the 6K, which left her in 87th out of 326 runners.

Three other Knox women ran season-best times – junior Cecilia Goodin (26:40.1, 149th place), sophomore Mary Stockwell (28:56.6, 240th place) and senior Eileen Sheetz (29:05.4, 243rd). On the men’s side, senior Elliott Varnum could also make that claim, finishing in 287th place with a time just under 30 minutes at 29:56.6.

Top-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won the men’s gold race with No. 2 Wartburg College right on its heels. Those two schools were reversed for the Blue race, with Wartburg having five of the top 11 runners to counteract UW-La Crosse’s winner.
The 2025 Division III CCIW Cross Country Championship will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois, hosted by Augustana College. The men’s race begins at 12:00 p.m. with the women’s race to follow at 12:45 p.m.
