Swimming: Galesburg 100, Moline 83
Galesburg ended its dual season on a high note, defeating Moline 100-83 on Oct. 14 at Mustain Pool to finish 9-0. The meet also served as a farewell for four seniors and 33-year head coach Ray VanHootegem.

Seniors Lily Furrow, Hayden Johnson, Maria Kamesa and Aila Worby will graduate at the end of the season. VanHootegem, who is retiring, will be honored following the Streaks Invite on Oct. 18.
The Streaks won eight of 10 events against Western Big 6 Conference rival Moline, taking the top two spots in three.
Faith Warren won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke and was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle relay teams. Macie Nelson captured the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and also swam on the victorious 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle teams.
For seniors Furrow and Johnson, the meet marked the end of a dream regular season, though the postseason still lies ahead with conference, sectional and state competition.
“We’d like to get the back-to-back conference titles,” Furrow said of the challenge. “It was tough last year, like, it was really tough last year to do it. I’m hoping we can do it again. Moline is gonna be our competition, and we just beat them today, and now we’ve just got to do it again in a couple weeks.”

Johnson said she was pleased with how the season turned out for her and the team.
“This season turned out a lot better than what I expected,” she said. “Sometimes you come into the season and just expect it to kind of be meh, but coming into this season, it was really good, and I’m happy with the outcome so far. I think what stands out about our team is how close we all are and how special the bonds are between everyone.”
Johnson is optimistic about the upcoming postseason.
“I know Lily and I both are expecting to continue going to state. Lily has gone to state for three years, and I’ve gone to state for one, and I’d like to go again,” she said. “It’s a fun experience, and I hope postseason goes well.”

Furrow noted that it was exciting she was in the group of swimmers for VanHootegem’s final year, but she was not sure what to expect as her senior season approached.
“I was always, like, go out with a bang, have a good season, have a fun year,” she said. “I have college to look forward to. I’ve committed (to the University of South Dakota); I have that. This year has been fun, but it also had a serious note as well. I have some pressure from everyone around me, but it’s still going well. I’m happy with how things are ending.”
Although the dual season is over, more swimming competitions remain. The Streaks Invitational begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 18 with diving, followed by the swimming events at 1 p.m. The ceremony for VanHootegem will take place after the event.
The Western Big 6 Conference diving and swimming meet will be Oct. 25 at Moline High School. The IHSA sectional swimming is Nov. 8, and the IHSA state competitions are Nov. 14-15.
