Despite strong first-half offensive statistics, Galesburg trailed Sterling by 26 points at halftime on Sept. 26. Things unraveled completely in the second half, and the Silver Streaks lost their first road game of the season, 48-0.
Sterling capitalized on big plays and Galesburg mistakes to blow the game open in the third quarter, triggering a running clock.

A look at the first half shows the Streaks had opportunities to stay competitive. Galesburg’s offense controlled the ball for about 17 minutes and had two chances to score, but it couldn’t finish either.
Sterling struck early with two first-quarter touchdowns to take a 12-0 lead, though missed conversions kept the game within reach.
Galesburg looked to shift the momentum with a long drive to open the second quarter. Starting at its own 22-yard line, the Streaks marched to the Sterling 3, fueled by Grady Hickey’s completions — three to Bradley Eaton, two to Antwon Walker and two to Demetrius Watson. Sterling penalties, including two for pass interference, also extended the possession.
With first-and-goal at the 3, Galesburg had its best scoring chance, but Sterling’s defense broke into the backfield for consecutive losses. On fourth down, Hickey’s pass to Walker at the goal line was knocked down. The 15-play, 69-yard drive, which took more than eight minutes, ended empty-handed.
Sterling quickly took control. On its next series, quarterback Brady Berlin connected with Quincy Maas for a 59-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 18-0 with 2:30 left in the half. Moments later, a bad snap over Hickey’s head gave Sterling the ball at the Galesburg 31. Two plays later, Berlin found Jack Saathoff in the end zone, making it 26-0 at halftime.
Galesburg nearly responded before the break. Starting at its own 33, Hickey connected with Ayden Clark and Walker, aided by a personal foul penalty, to move the ball to the Sterling 33. On the next play, Hickey threw a backward pass to Eaton, who launched a throw to Clark in the back of the end zone for what looked like a touchdown. But an ineligible receiver penalty erased the play, and the Streaks couldn’t capitalize before halftime.
Sterling put the game out of reach just 19 seconds into the third quarter when Wyatt Cassen broke a 59-yard touchdown run. With the 2-point conversion, the Golden Warriors led 34-0. Cassen finished with a standout night, adding a fumble recovery and seven tackles for loss in the first half alone.
Sterling struck again after recovering a fumble at the Galesburg 44. Five plays later, Corey Shipma scored, pushing the margin to 42-0 and initiating the running clock.
The final numbers, provided by Sterling, told the story: Galesburg finished with minus-30 rushing yards and 160 passing yards, all of its 11 first downs coming in the first half. Sterling racked up 261 rushing yards, 129 passing yards and 21 first downs.
The loss dropped Galesburg to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Western Big Six. Sterling improved to 3-2. The Silver Streaks return home Oct. 3 to face Geneseo after back-to-back road games.
